Peter Schuyff (Baarn, Netherlands, 1958) is a painter, sculptor and musician. Raised in Canada, he moved to New York in the 1980s and became part of the East Village scene, emerging as one of the key figures of the Neo-Geo movement alongside Peter Halley and Philip Taaffe — a tendency that reinterprets geometric abstraction through a post-pop sensibility, at once ironic and deliberately sensuous.
His paintings are built from thin layers of acrylic that generate undulating forms, grids and illusory volumes: his geometry is not rigid but pulsating, capable of suggesting depth and movement on the flat surface of the canvas. In several cycles he works on found canvases, layering his geometric forms over pre-existing images in a dialogue between appropriation and abstraction. He has exhibited at Pat Hearn Gallery and Leo Castelli in New York, at the Whitney Biennial (2014), the New Museum and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. In 2017 Le Consortium in Dijon presented a retrospective of his work from 1981 to 1989. His works are held at MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum in New York and MOCA in Los Angeles.
