Alberto Biasi (Padua, 1937) is one of the central figures of Italian and international kinetic and optical art. Trained at the Institute of Architecture in Venice, in 1960 he co-founded Gruppo N in Padua — with Ennio Chiggio, Toni Costa, Edoardo Landi and Manfredo Massironi — one of the key groups of Italian Arte Programmata, in dialogue with the European Nove Tendencije movement.
His practice is a sustained investigation into visual perception: from Trame to Rilievi ottico-dinamici, from Torsioni to Politipi and Assemblaggi, each cycle transforms the viewer into an active part of the work, whose form shifts with every change in viewpoint. He participated in the landmark exhibition The Responsive Eye at MoMA in New York and in the Venice Biennale. His works are held in over thirty public museums worldwide, including MoMA in New York, the Hermitage in St Petersburg and the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome.
