Ludwig Wilding

Wilding is associated with the german school of op art, a form of abstract art that uses optical illusions. This art form finds it’s roots within tromp l’oeil and derives from the constructivist practices of Walter Gropius’ Bauhaus.

The best method used to arrive to the desired optical illusion is to create effects using pattern and line, usually remaining in the black and white color range. Wilding creates like this three-dimensional patterns that shift as the beholder changes point of view.

In 1965, Ludwig Wilding participates at “The Responsive Eye” exhibition at the MoMA Museum in New York, alongside  well known Victor Vasarely, Richard Anuszkiewicz and Getulio Alviani.

We have available for sale an ‘Untitled’ work of Ludwig Wilding, dated 1976, dimension 60 x 60 cm, black and white mixed technique on wood.
