Toti Scialoja, born Antonio Scialoja (Rome, December 16, 1914 – Rome, March 1, 1998), was an Italian painter and poet. After an expressionist phase, he shifted towards an abstract-concrete pictorial language with a strong emphasis on material texture. A significant part of his work was dedicated to theater, where he collaborated with avant-garde writers, musicians, directors, and choreographers. Starting in 1961, he embarked on an original career as a poet, partially focusing on children’s literature, creating nonsense poems and limericks, which he illustrated himself. Scialoja also served as a professor and director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, where he taught many contemporary artists, including Mario Ceroli, Pino Pascali, Gian Carlo Riccardi, Jannis Kounellis, and Carlo Battaglia, who often remembered him as a significant influence on their artistic journeys.
