Tano Festa

Tano Festa (Rome, November 2, 1938 – Rome, January 9, 1988) was an Italian painter, photographer, and a key figure in the Roman Pop Art movement. Brother of Francesco Lo Savio, Festa graduated in photography from the Istituto d’Arte in Rome in 1957, influenced by the gestural and informal styles of Cy Twombly. His artistic career began in 1959 with a group exhibition at La Salita Gallery in Rome, where he would hold his first solo show in 1961.

Festa’s work is characterized by a rigorous formal approach, blending New Dada principles with representations of everyday objects like shutters, mirrors, and windows, which he transformed into iconic monochromatic paintings. Notable among these is Persiana (1963, F. Mauri Collection). Festa’s art reflects a dialogue between the ordinary and the symbolic, cementing his place as a significant voice in Italian contemporary art.
