Georges Mathieu

Georges Mathieu (1921–2012) was a French painter celebrated as the pioneer of lyrical abstraction. Known for his rapid, calligraphic brushstrokes executed with remarkable spontaneity, he transformed painting into a performative act. His works, often created in front of live audiences, embody energy, speed, and gesture, making him a central figure in post-war abstraction.
